Title: Grandmaster Sunny Tang, Pioneer of Wing Chun and Wushu in Canada, Passes Away at 78
Grandmaster Sunny Tang, who brought Wing Chun Kung Fu to Canada and dedicated over five decades to developing martial arts across the country, passed away on October 5, 2026. He was 78 years old.
Born in Hong Kong on September 3, 1946, Tang began his martial arts training at age 17 under Grandmaster Moy Yat, himself a direct student of the legendary Ip Man. After training for more than a decade in Hong Kong, Tang moved to England in 1971 before immigrating to Toronto in 1973, where he established the first Sunny Tang Martial Arts Centre - one of Canada's earliest Wing Chun schools.
Tang's influence extended far beyond his own schools. In 1993, he founded Wushu Canada, the official national federation representing Canada to the International Wushu Federation. He served on the IWUF Executive Board, led the Canadian delegation at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and hosted the 10th World Wushu Championships in Toronto in 2009 - the first time the event was held in Canada. In 2003, he won gold at the World Traditional Masters competition in China.
His contributions were recognized nationally when he received the Canada Day Achievement Award in 1990, and in 1992, he performed for Queen Elizabeth II during Canada's 125th anniversary celebrations. Through his teaching, Tang established more than ten Wing Chun centres across Canada, making his organization one of the nation's largest martial arts institutions.
