Peru’s top wushu athletes were officially recognized at a ceremony held in the Gustavo Mohme Hall of the Peruvian Congress, celebrating their achievements on the international stage. Organized by the Andean Parliament, the event brought together athletes, coaches, and officials to highlight the growing presence of wushu, also known as kung fu, in the country.

The recognition was led by Andean parliamentarian Leslye Lazo, who presented diplomas to athletes who had won gold, silver, and bronze medals. The tribute not only celebrated their competitive success but also acknowledged the dedication and perseverance required to represent Peru internationally, often under challenging conditions.

One of the standout athletes honored was Jesús Herreras, who won gold in the sanda 60–65 kg category.

“This medal represents years of discipline and effort. Competing and winning for Peru is the greatest pride,” he said, emphasizing the personal and national significance of his achievement.

The ceremony also highlighted the structural challenges faced by athletes. Federation president Miguel Ángel Castro pointed to logistical and administrative difficulties during recent competitions, noting that despite these obstacles, the athletes continued to perform at a high level.

"Despite that context, this recognition shows that the sacrifice was not in vain,” he said.

Closing the event, officials stressed the need to turn symbolic recognition into real support through stronger sports policies.

“The immediate challenge is to transform applause into real sports policies so that no talent has to compete under hardship again,” Lazo stated, calling for greater investment in infrastructure, training, and athlete support.
