More than 1,600 martial artists representing 111 teams from China and abroad have gathered in Yongchun, Fujian, for the 2026 National Traditional Wushu Open – Yongchun White Crane Kungfu Division, held from August 8 to 10.

The event marks a historic milestone for Yongchun White Crane Kungfu, as the traditional martial art has received its own dedicated division within China's national official tournament system for the first time in its more than 300-year history.

White Crane Kungfu was founded by Fang Qiniang during the Qing Dynasty and is recognized as the only Chinese martial art traditionally attributed to a woman as its founder. Over the centuries, the style has spread to more than 80 countries and was added to China's National Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2008.

The competition features more than 100 events across different age groups, including bare-hand routines, traditional weapons and sparring disciplines, allowing practitioners of different generations to compete on the same national stage.

The opening ceremony highlighted the cultural heritage of the discipline, combining traditional performances with modern technology as robots and martial artists demonstrated the 18 forms of White Crane Kungfu.

Beyond the competition, Yongchun has organized cultural and tourism activities alongside the tournament, including the Kungfu Yongchun specialty marketplace and events along Wuli Ancient Street, bringing together traditional crafts, local cuisine and martial arts culture.

The tournament represents a significant step in elevating Yongchun White Crane Kungfu within China's competitive wushu landscape while showcasing the centuries-old tradition to a growing international audience.
