Georgy Filimonov Proposes Making Wushu Mandatory Module in School Physical Education Across Russia
The Governor of Vologda Region spoke at a meeting of the State Council Commission on Sports, presenting the flagship regional project "Wushu in Schools." The initiative already covers 10 schools and 180 students, with classes taught by 10 specially trained teachers.
In the current year, the project will expand to 30 schools, involving 4,500 children, with 46.2 million rubles allocated for this purpose. By 2030, it is planned to cover all 310 schools in the region—134,000 students. Georgy Filimonov proposed including an adapted wushu module in federal educational standards as a mandatory part of physical education lessons.
"Wushu represents a very serious, but not fully appreciated resource in Russia for developing bilateral strategic Russian-Chinese partnership and strengthening bilateral Russian-Chinese relations. Our Chinese comrades treat this historical-cultural tradition, sport, and component of educational programs very attentively and carefully," the head of the region emphasized.
All regional proposals will be taken into account when preparing materials for the autumn State Council meeting as part of the "Russia—a Sports Power" forum. The initiative represents an ambitious effort to integrate traditional Chinese martial arts into Russia's national education system while strengthening cultural ties between the two countries.
