Thirteen-year-old Liu Mengjie, a seventh-grade student at Erxianqiao School in Chengdu, has won the 39 kg Youth Division title at the 2026 National Youth Wushu Club Sanda League in Tongchuan. She claimed the only gold medal won by Sichuan athletes at the competition.

The event, organized by the Wushu Sports Management Center of China’s General Administration of Sport and the Chinese Wushu Association, is one of the country’s largest youth Sanda competitions. The Tongchuan leg attracted 232 teams and 658 coaches and athletes from across China.

Despite the high level of competition, the championship was Liu’s first national tournament. Her coach had initially set a modest goal of winning a medal, but Liu went on to take the title. She reportedly stood stunned for several seconds when the referee raised her hand, only realizing she had won after her coach called out to her.

Liu’s unexpected national triumph has also drawn attention to her decision to pursue Sanda at such a young age, with her story and development now becoming a point of interest in Chengdu’s youth martial arts scene.
