Rising Malaysian actress Sandra Lim, 25, is making use of her wushu background by showcasing her martial arts skills in her first Malay-language film, Gayong 2. She expressed excitement about applying years of training in a new creative field after stepping away from competitive sport.
Sandra shared that she began practicing wushu at the age of 10, competing in national tournaments by 13 and reaching international competitions at 16.
“Wushu athletes must be ready to face injuries if they want to compete. I could no longer handle all that, so I stopped competing,” she said. “But I can still use what I learned in acting and show my abilities on the big screen.”
She described her role in Gayong 2 as a dream come true, especially as it is an action film that allowed her to fully utilize her martial arts experience.
“As a wushu practitioner, I was able to experiment with my skills through the fight scenes in this film,” she explained.
Notably, Sandra performed all of her action scenes without a stunt double.
“All the action scenes involving me in Gayong 2 are performed by myself without any substitute. I’m happy to have the chance to show this ability in acting. Every move you see in this film is my own effort,” she said.
Her transition from athlete to actress shows how skills developed through discipline and training can be successfully applied in new fields like film.
