Global martial arts icon Jackie Chan paid a special visit to Pei Chun Public School in Toa Payoh, Singapore, on July 7, where he met young wushu athletes and recipients of the Singapore Olympic Foundation-Peter Lim Scholarship (SOFPLS). Accompanied by Minister for National Development Chee Hong Tat and Kiat Lim of the Lim Family Foundation, Chan spent time engaging with students and celebrating their passion for martial arts.

Around 900 Primary 4 to 6 students and 21 current and former SOFPLS wushu scholars welcomed Chan with wushu, dragon dance, and lion dance performances, followed by a traditional dragon eye-dotting ceremony. Students also had the opportunity to ask him questions about resilience, discipline, and cultural pride before taking a group photo and giving him a lion dance farewell.

Among those inspired was 16-year-old Lucas Teo, a two-time SOFPLS high-performance scholarship recipient, who said: 

“I used to rewatch The Karate Kid over and over, imitating Jackie Chan’s stunts in my living room. He is the absolute reason I started wushu. Getting to meet him today and show him my form is a literal dream come true.”

The visit was organized by the Lim Family Foundation as part of its ongoing efforts to bring internationally recognized figures to Singapore to inspire young people. Previous guests have included Cristiano Ronaldo, Lewis Hamilton, and JJ Lin. Kiat Lim said:

“Jackie Chan is one of the most recognised faces in martial arts and global cinema. His lifelong journey is exactly the kind of beacon we want our young athletes to see.”

Launched in 2010 with a S$10 million donation from philanthropist Peter Lim, the SOFPLS has supported 5,629 young athletes in pursuing their sporting ambitions. An additional S$10 million commitment in 2019 ensured the scholarship program would continue through 2030, helping future generations of Singaporean athletes develop their talents.
