Egypt's Sondos Sonbol won the women's changquan combined final at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games with 18.660 points. Venezuela's Valeria Frannerys Dudamel Alvarado took silver and Rajkumari Lanchenbi Chanu won bronze, India's first wushu medal at an Olympic event.

The women's changquan combined event at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games has its first champion. Egypt's Sondos Sonbol won the final at the Dakar Expo Centre in Diamniadio on Tuesday, 3 November, with a combined score of 18.660, giving an African athlete gold in wushu at the first Olympic event ever held in Africa.

Venezuela's Valeria Frannerys Dudamel Alvarado took silver with 18.199. Bronze went to India's Rajkumari Lanchenbi Chanu with 18.039, a result that gives India its first wushu medal at any Olympic event.

Sonbol in control

Sonbol was strong across both parts of the combined event, which pairs a changquan (long fist) routine with a gunshu (staff) routine. France Télévisions, which broadcast the final, described the Egyptian as being "alone in the world" through the rounds of the tournament before she sealed gold in the final changquan routine. Xinhua photographers at the venue captured her celebrating after her gunshu performance.

A first for India

The 15-year-old Chanu, from Manipur, scored 9.316 in changquan, the second best mark of the final, and 8.723 in gunshu, the third best. Olympics.com called it India's first-ever wushu medal, and Indian media noted it was the country's third medal of the Games after judo silver and swimming bronze. Chanu won a bronze medal at the World Junior Wushu Championships in Tianjin earlier this year.

The rest of the final

France's Lisa Lo, who had been provisionally second after her first routine with 8.693, finished fifth with a total of 17.249, according to France Télévisions. Georgia's Gvantsa Karchava was also among the eight finalists.

The women's changquan final was one of four wushu medal events on Tuesday, the closing day of the sport's debut on the Youth Olympic programme. China's Lin Yilei won the men's changquan combined title earlier in the day. EUWUSHU.TV will report the men's and women's taijiquan results once they are officially confirmed.
