Cyprus hosts China-Cyprus Wushu Cultural Exchange Program in June
The Cyprus Wushu Kung Fu Federation, in partnership with the Academy for International Business Officials (AIBO) and the Confucius Institute at the University of Cyprus, is hosting the "China-Cyprus Sports and Cultural Exchange in Cyprus" program from June 29 to July 5. The week-long event at the University of Cyprus campus in Aglantzia, Nicosia, represents a significant milestone in bilateral cultural relations between the two nations, bringing three of China's most accomplished wushu coaches to the Mediterranean island.
The program features an exceptional coaching lineup led by Liang Xiaokui, Head Coach of the Guangdong Wushu Team's Taiji Group. A 7th Duan Chinese Wushu practitioner and national-level coach, Liang won gold in Women's Taijiquan at the 9th National Games, the Women's Taiji Sword title at the 5th Asian Wushu Championships, and the Women's Taijiquan championship at the 2nd East Asian Games. Her coaching career has produced world champions including Lu Xiangcheng, Liang Biying, Lu Zhuoling, Li Yang, Xiong Yiran, and Zhang Manlan. Joining her is Wei Xin, Head Coach of Shandong Wushu Academy, who received the National Excellent Coach Sports Medal and First-Class Merit Award of Shandong Province in 2016 for developing elite athletes such as Lyu Yongxu, Sun Peiyuan, and Wang Fei. Completing the trio is Chen Hongxing, Head Coach of the Shanxi Wushu Sanda Team, a former 65kg National Sanda Champion (2013, 2015) and bronze medalist at the 2014 Incheon Asian Games who has coached both the Shanxi provincial team since 2018 and the National Youth Team in 2023.
Participants will train across three core disciplines - Taijiquan, Taolu (forms), and Sanda (combat sparring) - while exploring the deeper philosophical dimensions of Chinese martial arts. Wushu encompasses three fundamental aspects known as Chan (Zen, a way of living), Wu (martial techniques), and Yi (healing and medicine). As Cyprus Wushu Kung Fu Federation Chairman Kypros Andreou has explained, Chinese martial arts are not primarily about fighting but about personality development and becoming a good person with good health - self-defense is merely a byproduct. The art emphasizes harmony between humans and nature, with practitioners focusing on both external and internal techniques to cultivate physical strength and mental calm.

The event builds on a growing foundation of wushu development in Cyprus. The Cyprus Wushu Kung Fu Federation, established in 2016, now oversees six clubs on the island with approximately 500 practitioners. The federation has achieved success at international competitions and continues to expand its reach annually. The Confucius Institute at the University of Cyprus, established in 2014 as the first on the island, has been instrumental in promoting Chinese language, culture, and arts through various programs and events. The two organizations previously collaborated on cultural initiatives, including a 2022 online event exploring the historical connections between Cypriot and Chinese martial arts traditions.
The Cyprus Wushu Kung Fu Federation expressed its satisfaction at participating in an initiative that strengthens friendship, cooperation, and cultural exchange between Cyprus and China while promoting wushu as a vehicle for sports, education, and personal development. Chairman Andreou has previously stated his vision of seeing wushu fully recognized as an Olympic sport - a goal that moved closer to reality with wushu's inclusion in the 2026 Youth Olympic Games. The week-long training program offers participants a rare opportunity to learn directly from elite Chinese coaches and gain deeper understanding of an art form that has evolved over thousands of years from the traditions of the Silk Road to become a modern international sport governed by the International Wushu Federation.
